Batrachognathus are small pterosaurs from the Jurassic period that lived 160-150 mn years ago on the territory of the modern Kazakhstan. Their name takes roots in the Greek language: "batrakhos" means "a frog" and "gnathos" means "jaws". These pterosaurs hunted at night, catching insects in flight, like the modern bats and birds.
The composition and rhythm of the relief capture the fluid grace of these elegant creatures in flight. The pterosaurs, leaping from the branches and soaring into the sky in pursuit of their prey, merge into a single wave. The elongated composition amplifies the sense of motion, while its spiral structure allows the viewer to see the hunters from multiple angles, revealing the full drama and beauty of their nocturnal dance.
